Women Foundation

Summary

Foundation for the Solidarity and Development of Women (The Women's Foundation) is a non-profit and non-governmental voluntary social welfare organisation. Established is 1988, it was formed to assist women who have been abused, harassed, evicted from their houses, handicapped, raped, sold or who otherwise suffer from abuse. Its strives to enhance mass awareness and consciousness for self-development and fostering social responsibilities and self-reliance in conjunction with development initiative at the village level.

Main Communication Strategies

Activities include: Organising seminars, workshops, street-plays, rallies and interaction programmes on Human Rights Awareness; Advocating for gender issues and property and inheritance rights; Identifying victims of state violence; Conducting literacy programmes for men, women and children; Providing legal assistance and legal literacy and awareness programmes; Running a home for destitute women and children; Running a Group Savings and Mobilisation Programme; Providing a Skills Development Training/Income Generating Programme for women.

Key Points

The Women's Foundation works for all people, irrespective of their caste, religion or race but with special emphasis on women and children. The Foundation is a founding member of the National Association of the NGOs for the Implementation of the Beijing Guidelines. They are currently (Feb 2000) the only member of the NGO Committee on UNICEF, International Network for Girls from Nepal.

Partners

This is a membership-based organisation. Every 3 years a General Assembly is held at which a new Executive Director is chosen. There is an Advisory Committee.
